When I first travelled to Burgundy, Beaujolais was in a downward spiral caused by the dreaded Nouveau, and the Mâconnais was almost entirely overlooked except as the plonkiest of plonk.
A new generation of winemakers have turned things upside down. Wines from the Mâconnais and Beaujolais are now first class wines, deserving of respect in their own right, modestly priced in comparison to their Burgundian cousins and great to drink this summer.
